Abstract   From Jan. 1973 to Dec. 1986, 713 patients with primary colorectal cancer were admitted to Department of Sugery, S.N.U.H. and treated by surgical resection of the primary tumor. To evaluate the age factor in colorectal cancer, these 713 patients were divided into three age groups according to the age at admission, i.e. under 30, 30 to 69 and over 70. Among three age groups, sex ratio, frequencies of bleeding per rectum, degree of obstruction, duration of symptom, size of the tumor, level of CEA, location of the tumor, gross configuration of the tumor, histologic grade of the tumor, depth of invasion, regional lymph node metastasis, Astler-Coller modified Dukes stage and survival rate were compared and analysed. The results were as follows: 1) In the young patient group (under 30 years of age), the proportion of mucinous adenocarcinoma and Astler-Coller modified Dukes stage C2 were higher and that of the rectal cancer less than 4 cm in maximum diameter was lower than those of the other age groups (p<0.05). 2) In the elderly patient group (over 70 years of age), the proportion of rectal cancer and bleeding per rectum were significantly higher than those of the other age goups (p<0.05). 3) The survival rate of the young patient goup (under 30 years of age) and that of the elderly patient group (over 70 years of age) were lower than that of the other (p<0.05). 4) There were no significant differences in sex ratio, degree of obstruction, duration of symptom, gross configuration of the tumor, depth of invasion and regional lymph node metastasis among three age groups.
